  • With only 1,400 job offers in public relations, 2017 was one of the worst times for the industry in many years. You were the most likely to find a job in a PR agency, as they provided more than 60 percent of job offers. Usually these concerned assistant and consultant positions. Companies and institutions offered jobs to PR professionals with more experience. The most job offers were provided by marketing, financial and insurance sectors.

“2017 was not the best time to look for a job in public relations. This is because of a much lower number of job offers compared to the year before. In 2017, Proto.pl recorded 1,400 job offers for PR professionals, which is 500 less than the year before. This number is also much lower from the perspective of recent years,” said Małgorzata Baran, Deputy Editor-in-Chief at PRoto.pl, in an interview with the Newseria Biznes news agency.

With as little as 1,400 job offers, 2017 was the worst year since 2013 (1,380) and the second worst since 2009. During the best years, the number of job offers had reached 1,900.

“The best time to look for a job in PR was March, while the least favourable period was the end of the year. Just like during the previous years, December was again the month with the lowest number of job offers. In December 2017, there were only 79 such offers,” Małgorzata Baran explained.

This downward trend in the number of published job offers at the end of the year has been visible since 2013. On the other hand, the best month, March, saw 150 offers.

“PR professionals were the most likely to find a job in an agency. As many as 64 percent of all job offers were published by agencies. They usually looked for consultants or assistants. These positions accounted for 52 percent of all offers published by agencies. These were followed by trainees and interns and specialists,” said the Deputy Editor-in-chief at PRoto.pl.

In total, agencies published more than 900 offers, with 488 (35 percent) coming from companies and institutions. The least popular way to find a PR employee was via an intermediary. There were only 11 such job offers, which accounted for about 1 percent.

“Companies and institutions looked for more experienced employees, because companies usually hire specialists. Such job offers accounted for as much as 61 percent of all offers published by companies and institutions,” Małgorzata Baran noted.

In both companies & institutions and agencies, managers were the least likely to find a job, with such offers constituting only 10 percent of offers from companies and institutions and 5 percent of those from agencies. Overall, during the previous year, managerial and directorial positions were offered 100 times (7 percent), which was 28 more (4 percent) than the year before.

Recruiting agencies did not usually disclose the industries in which the positions were offered. Offers from companies and institutions, on the other hand, usually concerned the marketing, financial, insurance and NGO sectors. Only a year earlier, out of 341 offers with a specified industry, 97 (more than 12 percent) concerned the IT. In 2017, there were no such clear trends.

“When it comes to locations in which jobs were offered, the capital city was the leader. As many as 80 percent of all offers concerned employment in the Mazowieckie Province, of which the majority was about jobs in Warsaw itself. These were followed by the Dolnośląskie, Małopolskie and Łódzkie Provinces, which, however, offered much less employment opportunities,” Małgorzata Baran explained.

The most popular reasons for recruiting PR professionals were new clients and staff turnover.

2017 was not the best time to look for a job in public relations, as seen in the much lower number of job offers compared to the year before. The reverse was the case with companies and institutions, which were after more experienced employees, as companies and institutions were the most likely to hire specialists. Such offers accounted for as many as 61 percent of all offers published by companies and institutions. For years, both companies and agencies have clearly been the least likely to offer managerial positions. In 2017, there were only 100 job offers for directors and managers from companies and agencies combined.

In terms of location, the capital city has been the leader for years. As many as 80 percent of all offers concerned employment in the Mazowieckie Province, of which the majority was about jobs in Warsaw itself.
