The printing industry in Poland is prospering. The problem does not lie in low reading rates but in payment deadlines and the financial condition of publishers

Nearly 40 percent of Poles read at least one book per year. Although the reading level is low, we buy books increasingly often. The number of published titles is also growing, and since 1991 it has seen an almost threefold increase. For the printing industry this is a favourable situation, especially on the market of hardcover books, which guarantee the highest mark-ups. At the same time, the average circulation of the published titles is decreasing, which is why more and more companies choose digital publishing, which is much less expensive than traditional printing.

A Polish start-up intends to revolutionise the distribution of the press. The new subscription-based model is similar to that of Netflix.

Publico24 has created a model for the digital distribution of the press, based on subscriptions, resembling Netflix. Thanks to small transmitters installed in public places, readers with an app installed on their mobile phones can have unlimited access to their favourite papers or individual articles The service is free for readers, and the subscription cost is covered by businesspeople or owners of venues, for whom this is an opportunity to expand their range of services. The company is already working on providing access to the digital press for individual users based on monthly subscriptions.

Warsaw to see almost PLN 3.2 bn in investment spend this year. Most of this money will be allocated for transport, roads, and culture

This year, Warsaw is planning to spend more than PLN 3.2 bn on investment. A portion of these funds will be allocated to patch up Warsaw’s shortcomings in transport. The efforts will focus on the extension of the municipal transport system, including Line 2 of the Metro. A substantial amount of funds will be allocated for the extension of the educational and social infrastructure, as well as culture – including in particular Sinfonia Varsovia’s concert hall, the Museum of Modern Art and the Teatr Rozmaitości theatre. Warsaw’s authorities will also prioritise the fight against high emissions, including by getting rid of “dirty” stoves.

The Staszic Institute: Polish Government’s purchase of the Czartoryski collection was not a mistake. Criticism of the purchase has a negative impact on Poland's international reputation.

Criticising the Government's purchase of works of art from the Princes Czartoryski Foundation is not favourable for Poland’s international reputation, experts of the Staszic Institute emphasised. The dispute over the legitimacy of the transaction reignited when it turned out that the money went to the bank account of a newly established foundation in Liechtenstein, and that the family conflict in the aristocratic family will find its way to court. According to the experts of the Staszic Institute, the purchase was necessary and the price was very reasonable, whereas the issue of what the seller does with the money from the transaction is not anybody else's concern.
